Spaying and Neutering

Spaying or neutering your pet is beneficial to their health, and can prevent unwanted litters and certain cancers. Spaying or neutering can also help with some behavioral problems. Appropriate ages for spay/neuter vary from breed to breed and we’re happy to guide you in choosing the right time to spay or neuter your pet. Recovery time is usually quick after a brief stay in the clinic and rest at home.

Soft Tissue Surgery

Soft tissue surgeries include the removal of soft tissue tumors and skin growths. Some of these growths can be malignant and may require further biopsy or lab testing. We usually recommend biopsy prior to any surgical removal.

Abdominal Surgery

Abdominal procedures offered include:

  • Splenectomy—Spleen removal
  • Gastric and Intestinal Surgery—Foreign object obstructions
  • Cystectomy—Bladder surgery

After major abdominal surgery, your pet will require a longer stay at the clinic or a transfer to a 24-hour hospital for continued recovery. They will receive antibiotics, IV fluids and pain relief, and additional monitoring from technical staff and veterinarian to ensure a complete recovery.

What to Expect Before a Procedure

Before surgery, a full consultation with our doctor will be scheduled. We will perform any necessary tests, answer your questions, and give you pre-surgery instructions. You will need to fast your pet for 8 to 10 hours before any procedure that requires anesthetics, including dental cleanings. If we need any blood work, an ECG, and/or xrays we will either perform these tests during this consultation or schedule the tests for another time.

After a Procedure

On the day of the procedure, you’ll need to arrive early to sign consent forms and discuss options with the surgical technician. Depending on the procedure, you will either be able to return that afternoon or need to transfer your pet to a 24-hour hospital for extra recovery time. You will receive discharge information, medications, and instructions.

We want your pet to have as smooth a recovery as possible. Following all discharge instructions is crucial to your pet’s recovery. If you have any questions at all about your pet’s post-operative care, we encourage you to call us at 916-829-8207.
